Project 1 "3D Badge"

Project 1

Quick 3D Conversion Technique

Jadi ini lah cara aku tukar lencana skolah aku ni kepada 3D

Sebenarnye aku tak tahu mcm mane nak gune 3ds Max.Komputer aku x ckup laju tuk bukak program tu.Jadi aku x dek peluang nak blaja app tuh.Oleh itu, aku try jek ah buat gne Google sketchup, x sangke bleh jd jgak.
Aku dpt ilham projek ni daripada gamba Lencana Hillcrest 3D ni,yg bleh ditemui di Laman Web Rasmi SMK Hilcrest, bile aku tgok gamba ni aku rase pelik sbb gamba 3D ni x same dgan lencana sebenar Hillcrest, Dgan itu terkluar lah Idea dri otak aku ni untuk buat balik lencana ni dlm bentuk 3D tanpa mengubah bentuk asal lencana ni.

Haha...

Aku start projek ni sbelum aku pandai gne Adobe Illustrator. Sbenarnye lebih senang nak mulekan projek ni dgan outline dlu lencana ni gne Illustrator.Lpas tu export-import outline tu dlm sketchup gne .dwg file format.

Project Work Flow

Step 1 'Main Body'
  • First, aku wireframe base outline body dia gne curve tool.
  • Lpas tu aku main sambung2 line tu supaye permukaannye muncul mcm dlm gamba kat sbelah ni.
  • Setelah itu, aku gne SubdivideAndSmooth plugin dari smustard.com untuk ubah  model ni kpd High Polly model.(hilankan line2 yg meneyemak ni dan jadikan permukaan perisai ni lg cantik).
  • Kemudian mulelah langkah tuk texture kan model ni, mudah jek aku bahagikan surface model ni gne Tools on Surface plugin.
  • Then, ianya di warnakan mengikut warna dlm gamba.

Step 2 'Blue Torch'

  • Same jek prosesnye. Aku wat obor ni pnye wireframe gne curve tool. Mcm dlm gamba sbelah ni.
  • Tapi yg ni aku gne plugin bg senang kje skit.Boleh gne skin tool atau curviloft tool plugin. Dua2 same jek hasilnye.(atas sbb2 yg tertentu, aku gne dua2 plugin)

  • Ni lah hasil model obor yg dah siap.
  • Tp sebenarnye aku dah re-model api obor ni, aku gne Soap Skin&Bubble Tool plugin. korang pasti terpegun dgan plugin ni, sgt bergune.
  • Badan obor ngan api dia aku groupkan berasingan, lpas tu aku gne soften/smooth edges command tuk hide line2 yg menyibok nih.
  • Then, aku color je lah obor ni.

Step 3 'Big Books'

  • This part is the trickiest object to be modelled. I modelled this book without following the real shape of the books that supposed to be created if I follow the original picture.
  • The original image show the illusion that the books are in 3d and have depth. So the correct 3d that should be modelled are the 3d books that half closed. But, my 3d books does not follow the real shape of the books. Some times to make a nice 3d we does not need to follow the real shape of the object. Base on this point of view, I just created this model as show on the image above.

  • Haha, after a while I tried to build this books. At last, I did it. I spend a lot of time trying to build this model correctly. The bottom part of this books is the hardest part to be constructed. You know what, it worth it, I successfully create a fine 3d books.

Step 4 'Rolled Certificate'
  • For this rolled thing, we need a bit of creativity to create a right shape.
  • What I did is drawing the rolled shape that looks like the hypnosis thing.
  • Then I draw half curve line to match the curvature of the original shape of this object.
  • Actually for the symmetrical object, I only build half of this object, then copy and invert it later to achieve our objective shape.
  • Next, what I did is copy the curve line and paste it into each vertices of the rolled outline as shown on the left object on the image above.
  • As usual after creating wire frame of this object. The skin of this object are then created using skin tool. The result of this operation shows on the right most object on the image above.
  • So, this is the product of the object that I have modelled.
  • But, then I realize that some thing is missing. It was a red ribbon that supposed to be placed at the center of this object.

Step 5 'Red Ribbon'
  • To achieve a perfect shape of the ribbon that match the shape of the rolled certificate. I copy the center part of this certificate and coloured it to red to make the ribbon ring that coil the certificate.
  • Then, to give thickness to this ring, I used Joint Push Pull tool. This plugin is needed as the build-in push/pull tool does not work on a curve surface.
  • Hahaha, I have some problem, what should this ear shape object called. So lets just call it the 'Thing'.
  • Ok, to make this Thing, I take half part of the rolled certificate and the ribbon ring as a guide.
  • By using curviloft tool plugin, I only need to draw 2 rectangle and 1 path. Using loft along path command that contain in this plugin I achieve the shape I needed.
  • Thanks to this plugin I successfully create this Thing in no time.

Step 6 'Big Ribbon'

  • To make this ribbon, I use intersection technique that are inspired by this video.
  • This image on the right side show two outline of the ribbon that are draw to looks like we view it from plan and front view.

  • By using push pull and plugins that can push/pull line (sorry I don't remember its name). I created 3d object that intersect each other. Then I use intersect with model command to get the intersection line as shown in this image.

  • After unwanted detail are deleted and the shape of the ribbon is perfected, this is the 3d big ribbon that I have created.

Step 7 'The Text'

  • In this step I use build-in sketchup text maker to make 3d text. Then I ungroup this text and arrange it manually to match the text in the original badge photo.
  • Next, I used the intersect with model command and extract the intersection surface.

Step 8 'Putting Them Together'
